On August 19, 2021, an industrial design for which the Republic of Belarus is indicated as a Contracting Party, on whose territory the international registration is valid, was registered for the first time in the International Register of Industrial Designs.

Legal protection for the design of the remote control (international registration number DM/216019) was sought by Apple Corporation (US) under the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs of July 2, 1999 (the Geneva Act), which entered into force for Republic of Belarus July 19, 2021.

The Republic of Belarus became the 66th state party to the Geneva Act and the 75th to the Hague Union. The application of the Geneva Act makes it possible to simplify the procedures of obtaining legal protection for industrial designs and maintaining patents in force on the territory of all states parties to the Geneva Act (the “one-stop-shop” principle).

To obtain protection in any state party to the Geneva Act, one international application must be drafted using one language only and sent to one Office (International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization) with minimal costs (one set of fees in one currency).

The use of the advantages provided by the Geneva Act makes it possible to reduce the cost of obtaining legal protection for industrial designs simultaneously on the territory of several states parties to this Act.
