On August 12, 1995, the Eurasian Patent Convention (the Convention) entered into force. The Convention is a special agreement under Article 19 of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property of March 20, 1883 and a regional patent treaty under Article 45(1) of the Patent Cooperation Treaty of June 19, 1970.

The Republic of Belarus ratified the Convention on April 13, 1995.
Today the regional system of granting legal protection for inventions established by the Convention covers eight states of the Eurasian space: the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

In accordance with the Convention, the functioning of the patent system is ensured by the Eurasian Patent Organization, which bodies are the Administrative Council and the Eurasian Patent Office.

The Eurasian Patent Office issues a Eurasian patent for an invention, which is valid for 20 years from the date of filing of the Eurasian application.

Belarusian applicants actively use this regional system, which is confirmed by the registration of more than 2,000 applications with the National Center of Intellectual Property.

For reference: In accordance with the Convention the National Center of Intellectual Property is the receiving office for Belarusian applicants filing Eurasian applications.
