Belarusian experts can get acquainted with the results of a study supported by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which presents the results of the study of the practice of online marketplaces in the field of combating counterfeit goods.

The report describes the main problems that hinder the effective fight against counterfeiting, namely:

  • absence of serious measures taken by the majority of marketplaces to combat counterfeit goods;
  • intermediation of online marketplaces in linking illegal suppliers with consumers around the world;
  • lack of a consistent anti-counterfeiting strategy in most of the selected marketplaces;
  • social media's negligence in adhering to its coordinated anti-counterfeiting policies;
  • неадекватность процедур верификации, что подрывает способность контроля нелегальных продавцов;
  • lack of ethical technologies that allow to control and suppress the activities of unfair e-commerce market participants;
  • lack of information and low levels of data sharing among e-commerce, intellectual property and interpersonal professionals.

The researchers conclude that, given the complexity of the field, the diversity of participants and business models in this industry, it is necessary to consider the possibility of developing a common, risk-based anti-counterfeiting system.
