On April 16 2026, the National Press Centre of the Republic of Belarus hosted a conference on the topic «World Intellectual Property Day: The Role of Intellectual Property Protection in Sport».

The event was attended by Aliaksei Kurman, Director General of the National Centre of Intellectual Property; Valentyna Ananieva, Director of the Institute of Sports and Tourism Management at the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture; and Yury Nechypurenko, Head of the Research and Innovation Department at the Research Institute of Physical and Chemical Problems of the Belarusian State University.

«The sports industry is a major economic sector: advertising, club branding, and sports venues. Our sports federations and clubs actively utilise all available intellectual property tools. In Belarus, there are over 9,000 registered trademarks relating to sport, and more than 100 patents for industrial property in the sports sector», said the Director General of the National Centre of Intellectual Property.

Furthermore, the sports industry encompasses everything related to sports medicine, pharmacology, athlete training and injury rehabilitation. The National Centre of Intellectual Property has filed patent applications for ski training simulators, training facilities for wrestlers and developments in the field of sports medicine.

«The scientific and technical sector is also making its contribution. From this year onwards, the ‘Technology and Sport’ programme will be implemented as part of state scientific and technical programmes, and we expect to see new results from scientific and technical activities within the framework of its implementation over the next five years», – said Aliaksei Kurman.
