In Belarus, Written Language Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. This holiday, which links the native written word with the history and culture of the nation and highlights the importance of intellectual property in modern society, was established by a Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus in 1994.

In 2026, the celebrations will mark the Year of the Belarusian Woman, the 85th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War, the anniversaries of national literary classics, and the ‘Five-Year Plan for Quality’. The main celebrations will take place in the town of Kostyukovichi in the Mogilev Region.

Furthermore, in accordance with the tradition, festive events are held in the historic centres of culture, science, literature and printing – Polotsk, Turov, Novogrudok, Nesvizh, Orsha, Pinsk, Lida and others. These locations host forums for discussing issues relating to the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage, as well as the protection of copyright and related rights.

The main aim of the celebration is to preserve and develop Belarus’s spiritual heritage, promote national traditions, and support Belarusian literature and book publishing. Belarusian Literature Day serves as a reminder of the need to protect copyright, which helps to preserve and enhance Belarus’s cultural and intellectual wealth.
