On April 2, 2021, during the sessions of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian parliamentarians reviewed and approved the draft law “On the Accession of the Republic of Belarus to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs”.

The Geneva Act provides for the effective functioning of the international system of registration and legal protection of industrial designs (appearance (design) of products).

Currently, 65 states, including the Russian Federation, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Kyrgyz Republic and others are parties to the Geneva Act.

According to Alexander Shumilin, the Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus, the accession of the Republic of Belarus to the Geneva act will simplify the procedure for the Belarusian applicants wishing to obtain legal protection of industrial designs and maintain the respective patents in force on the territory of all Member States of the Geneva Act at one time.

To obtain an industrial design patent in any Member State of the Geneva Act, you will need to file one international application in one language and send it to one receiving office (International Bureau of WIPO) at minimal cost (one set of patent fees – in one currency).

“The accession of the Republic of Belarus to the Geneva Act will also reduce the costs of Belarusian applicants for obtaining legal protection of their industrial design simultaneously in several states”, noted Alexander Shumilin.
