EEC and WIPO reach a new stage of cooperation in IP sphere

The prospects for collective management of copyright and related rights, as well as the improvement of the legislation of the Eurasian Economic Union countries in this area were discussed at the Joint Regional Online Seminar of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The seminar was the first joint EEC-WIPO meeting within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the World Intellectual Property Organization of May 7, 2019.
According to the Director of the ECE Business Development Department Galiya Dzholdybaeva, collective management organizations have a sufficient set of tools that help them ensure compliance with intellectual property rights in cases where the author does not have the ability to do it on its own. It is easier for them to interact with users, as they act as conscientious intermediaries between copyright holders and persons using their intellectual property rights, simplifying the process of obtaining remuneration. These principles form the basis of the Agreement on the Procedure for Copyright and Related Rights Management of May 27, 2019, developed by EEC in cooperation with the EAEU member states. “The main purpose of the agreement is to establish a coherent order of copyright and related rights management on a collective basis, including increased transparency of activities performed by these organizations, control of equity of the remuneration distribution, minimizing possible misuses on their part”, stated the Director of the EEC Department.
