In Belarus, the rules regarding administrative procedures for appellations of origin are about to be amended. According to the Regulation of the Government of the Republic of Belarus dated June 19, 2020 No. 356 “On Amending the Decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus dated February 17, 2012 No. 156” legal protection will be provided not to the appellations of origin, but to geographical indications. Thus, the administrative procedures for registration and issuance of a certificate conferring the right to use the appellation of origin of goods have been changed to that of a geographical indication, including extension of its validity period. These amendments will enter into force on August 29, 2020.

Also, since August 29, 2020, the consolidated list of administrative procedures will be supplemented with a new administrative procedure, which provides for the issuance of an agreement document to use in the trademark designations representing the state symbols of the Republic of Belarus (State Emblem of the Republic of Belarus, State Flag of the Republic of Belarus), official abbreviation or the full name of the Republic of Belarus, state awards of the Republic of Belarus, or designations similar to them. Such consent will be provided by the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus. The administrative procedure for issuing an agreement document to use certain signs in a trademark will be free of charge.
