On February 2, 2021, the first informal consultation on the Design Law Treaty (DLT), initiated by the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations, at the invitation of the Chair of the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), took place. The representative of Mexico also currently chairs the WIPO Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications.

The consultation was attended by the Regional Coordinators delivering statements from their respective groups, as well as interested WIPO Member States. On behalf of the Republic of Belarus the event was attended by the representatives of the National Center of Intellectual Property, namely the Head of the Industrial Property Examination Department Alena Usachova, Head of the Legal and Human Resources Department Tatsiana Kavaleuskaya, Head of the Trademarks Department Natallia Sinishova, Head of the International Cooperation Division Arthur Akhramenka, Leading Specialist of the Legal and Human Resources Department Elzhbeta Skshidleuska.


Within the framework of the meeting, draft instructions and articles regarding the law and practice in the field of industrial designs were considered, issues related to the finalization of the DLT, as well as convening of a Diplomatic Conference as a potential platform for the adoption of the abovementioned document were discussed.

As a result of the consultation, the participants expressed their readiness to continue the step-by-step work on the approval of the DLT text in order to ensure its adoption by all the interested parties.
