The National Center of Intellectual Property jointly with the Republican Library for Science and Technology held a webinar on topical issues of development of the intellectual property system on April 22, 2020.

This event is dedicated to the World Intellectual Property Day, which is annually celebrated on April 26 with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization. The motto for this year's Day is “Innovate for a “Green” Future”.

Ms. Elena Kaminskaya, Head of the Department of Analytical Work, Science and Information of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, Ms. Irina Usova, “Green Cities” Project Manager of the UN Development Program in Belarus, Ms. Nadezhda Batova, Head of the Environmental and Economic Problems Sector of the Institute of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as well as Ms. Valentina Dynich,  Director of LLC “BelBrandAudit”, took part at the even in addition to experts from the National Center of Intellectual Property and the Republican Library for Science and Technology.

The event was opened by the welcome address of  Mr. Uladzimir Rabavolau, Director General of the National Center of Intellectual Property, and Ms. Raisa Sukhorukova, the Director of the Republican Library for Science and Technology.

“The World Intellectual Property Day is a close and significant date for us. On this day, April 26, 1970, exactly 50 years ago, the Republic of Belarus became a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization”, – Uladzimir Rabavolau said. 

In his speech, the Director General also emphasized the importance of topical issues and challenges in the context of transition to a “green” economy and the role of the intellectual property system as one of the key tools in implementing the ideas of a “green” future. 

The Director of the Republican Library for Science and Technology in her greeting noted the relevance of modern challenges related to environmental protection and the development of environmentally sound technologies.

In her speech, Raisa Sukhorukova outlined the availability and functioning of the Sustainable Development Database in the Library, which allows increasing the general public’s interest in environmental, economic and social well-being of people. Thematic literature and documentation are provided monthly for placement in the indicated database by the Department of Public Information of the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus and by the managers of various UN programs operating in Belarus. “The Republican Library for Science and Technology drew attention to issues of sustainable development back in 2003, when, together with the UN Office, the first and currently only Library for Sustainable Development in our country was formed on its basis,” – Raisa Nikandrovna said.

Topical issues that reveal the goals of the green economy were touched upon during the discussion. The role of intellectual property in stimulating and promoting environmentally sound innovations was also discussed. Speakers of the webinar in their speeches have repeatedly noted the key role of innovation in ensuring a “green” future. 

“Nowadays, when new approaches, strategies and programs are actively being formed in the Republic of Belarus in various areas of development, it is more relevant than ever to introduce new technologies, innovations and services that will help to solve a number of social, economic and environmental problems in the future. Such decisions will allow us to ensure social justice and at the same time minimize environmental risks”, –  emphasized Ms. Elena Kaminskaya, Head of the Department of Analytical Work, Science and Information of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.

Within the framework of the event, the work carried out by the National Center of Intellectual Property on preparation of the Strategy of the Republic of Belarus in the Sphere of Intellectual Property for 2021-2030 was actively discussed. “The future strategy should be aimed at developing the national intellectual property system, taking into account new needs, priorities and challenges of society, and also should be based on the already achieved results,” – said Ms. Tatsiana Kavaleuskaya, Head of the Legal and Human Resources Department of the National Center of Intellectual Property, in her speech on “The National Strategy in the Sphere of Intellectual Property as the Basis of the Innovative Economy Model”.
