VISIT OF WIPO DEPUTY DIRECTOR GENERAL TO BELARUS
On January 29, a roundtable with the participation of patent experts and patent attorneys was held on the basis of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus (SCST). Director General of the National Center of Intellectual Property (NCIP) Piotr Broukin, heads of structural units of NCIP, as well as Chairperson of the Belarusian Association of Patent Attorneys Olga Kuznetsova and Judge of the Judicial Board for IP Cases of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus Oleg Latyshevich participated in the discussion of topical issues that the Belarusian intellectual property system deals with. Mr. Sandage replied to numerous questions from the Belarusian side and provided his comments on the achievements in cooperation between WIPO and Belarus and possible ways of its intensification.
In the afternoon, a meeting with Chairperson of SCST Alexander Shumilin was organized. In the framework of the meeting, discussion on the importance of the system of protection and management of intellectual property rights for development of science and innovations in the country took place.
On January 30, Mr. Sandage met with Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) and Vice-Chairperson of the Presidium of NASB Sergey Kilin and other representatives of the Apparatus of NASB. During the meeting, issues of commercialization of intellectual property objects were discussed.
A meeting with Vice-Chairperson – Chairperson of the Judicial Board for IP Cases of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus Zhanna Shkurdyuk and judges of the Judicial Board was also held on January 30. Mr. Sandage showed interest in learning the specificity of consideration of disputes relating to intellectual property rights so far as his responsibility includes, inter alia, the coordination of the work of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center.
