Due to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (hereinafter – the United Kingdom) from the European Union since February 1, 2020 a transitional provision will be established under the Madrid system for the International Registration of Trademarks on the following conditions. Till December 31, 2020 international applications and registrations containing the European Union indication will also be valid in the United Kingdom (including applications filed from February 1 till December 31, 2020, and registrations made from February 1 till December 31, 2020).
The United Kingdom has notified the International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization (hereinafter – WIPO) that it will ensure that at the end of the transitional period the respective trademarks will continue being protected in the United Kingdom (see WIPO International Bureau message here).
The stakeholders are encouraged to monitor further changes. On the WIPO International Bureau website you can also subscribe to Madrid Notices regarding the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks.
